Northern Territory waters make up part of the last global stronghold for endangered sawfish and one of the world’s rarest shark species, the speartooth shark.
Commercial gillnets continue to operate in their critical habitats along the coastlines of major river systems in the NT. In 2024, areas like the Roper River, are being exposed to the highest commercial fishing pressure in a decade.
